How it all started
Otsuka, 51380 byte(s). Wado-ryu Karate is a karate style that was developed by professor Hironori Otsuka. This extremely talented budoka was born in 1892 in Ibaragi near Tokyo.
Initially he studied for years the Oshinryu-Jujitsu, in which he already at a very young age started to develop himself into a true master.

In 1922, he observed, as advised by a friend, in the dojo of Jigoro Kano, (the raiser of Judo) a demonstration of Karate by Funakoshi. Immediately he realised how enriching this style of martial arts could mean for the further development of his Jujitsu.
Funakoshi explained that it normally takes a budo expert to learn the 15 training forms of the kata within two years.

Otsuka started cooperating with Funakoshi and made himself familiar with the kata within one and half a year. With a background of Jujitsu in mind Otsuka claimed that certain techniques in kata were practically not executable, so he decided to go to Okinawa for further examination. But then the was given the chance to give a demonstration of Okinawa karate during a budo gala in the imperial palace. Because Funakoshi and Otsuka wanted to show more than the solo forms of kata, Otsuka developed a number of karate forms for an attacker and defender in accordance with the trainings model of Jujitsu.

The demonstration, in which they showed defences against sword attacks, turned out to be a great success. An enormous interest in karate was born and Otsuka started teaching Funakoshi for a period of time. Based on his Jujitsu experience Otsuka wanted to introduce free combat in karate with opponents besides the already existing kata and basic techniques. Within the Japanese Jujitsu that he had rehearsed until then, kata was already used as a trainings form for free combat.
However, Funakoshi was too much tied to the traditional karate to accept this new vision of Otsuka that they decided to separate.

Otsuka started combining more and more the different techniques of Jujitsu and Karate, and in 1934 he opened his own dojo in Tokyo. It took him until 1938 to be able to give up his own job so he could focus on teaching completely. At that moment he gave the name "Wado-ryu" to his school. However it would last until after the war until he could expand karate, in particular at universities.

In the beginning of the 50's the first combats were performed by the students, where rules were far to be found. The fights were tough and there was not much control.
Within due time rules were developed, this was the start of competition in karate that is practised all over the world nowadays. At this moment Wado-ryu is the most practised karate style in the world.
